Treat and a trick

The flow of kids calling for candy has slowed at my house making time for this blogging. First, the treat from Tim Burton's classic Halloween-ish movie -

and the other mentioned element comes from the state government of Iowa, where they've decided to tax pumpkins. Google has many links about this nasty trick.

More and different Halloween treats at Memory, Making, Meaning.

and talk like a pirate day comes tomorrow.

Still a small bit of time away, until then you might check out my latest movie review at Endervidualism, which also gets linked from my latest Ender's Review.

Farm on the Freeway

Often people mention roads as a function the state must perform. Eminent domain sometimes figures prominently in their arguments. Not long ago state roads came up here. I figure this post qualifies as somewhat relevant to that.

Unlike Sunni, who came "rather late to the Jethro Tull party," I’ve been a Tull fan for a very long time. I am willing to say they’ve made some of my favorite music (admittedly Anderson’s overblowing can distract, but I excuse it). I saw them perform live in Madison back in 1973 on their Passion Play tour. (Yeah, I’m getting old. I wasn’t certain about that concert date, but as always the web came in handy.)

If I asked who might represent libertarians in progressive rock (or folk rock, or some other rock category, I don’t want to argue over which Tull might best fit - that misses my point), I doubt many would suggest Jethro Tull as the group to get the nod. However, on occasion, they deliver a subtle anti-state message. I usually like subtle more than a swinging 2 by 4.

How many songs about the essential injustice of eminent domain can you name? How about this one ?

I find it moving.

Shooter, you might like it, I did.

I saw this movie last night. It may not be in theaters much longer. It has qualities that a large screen will show better than a small one.

and Now the Good News

I don't own a laptop/notebook computer, but have wanted one for a while. In the future I plan on building other types of computers myself from parts, but I've heard putting a notebook together that way presents more of a challenge than I want for my first attempt. So I've been looking for other options that don't involve paying Microsoft for Windows.

Today PC World offers an article with this headline:
Dell to Offer Ubuntu Linux on PCs, Laptops.

How does the State (and other confidence organizations) do it?

Propaganda often figures heavily in state tactics. Peer pressure (cultivated in state-run schools) and exploitation of fear have figured prominently in recent State propaganda. After that preface, now the fun memage part, this video has been wildly popular lately.

Many may soon come to sad realizations

When fast forwarding through the commercials tonight while watching The Daily Show (one of the very few items I TiVo), I noticed one of those Apple commercials with John Hodgman as the PC and Justin Long as the Mac. Although I'm not a Mac user, I've usually found the ads in this series entertaining enough to watch, at least once anyway. Tonight I saw a new Hodgman/Long Mac/PC advert. I liked this one enough to search it out at You Tube for embedding here. I hope you like it.

I figured that ad would be out there since it hits an important nail. Linux may also benefit greatly by gaining new users as a result of many coming sad realizations about Vista. Here's a search link to YouTube for some more Mac and PC videos, as well as some knock-off style parodies. Some of the parodies seem pretty good too although most cover a different topic. Enjoy !

Previously mentioned forthcoming material

In Sunni's last posting here, she mentioned "an exposition" which would be “forthcoming at Endervidualism.”

That exposition has now come forth. I hope you enjoy it. I did !

Meme of Four

B.W. Richardson tagged me for the “Meme of Four” last Saturday. I’ve taken a while to respond, but better late than never, I hope.
