Frodo or Boromir?

Dale over at Anarchy in Your Head has created an excellent cartoon that very succinctly presents why I cannot support He-Who-Will-Not-Be-Named-Here:

Ron Paul and the Ring of Power cartoon

Someone commented on that post that RP is Frodo, which set me to laughing. But then I got to thinking ... is someone like Frodo possible? I don’t think so; I don’t think Gandhi measures up, although he might come closest. I’m not sure that it’s productive to dwell on such questions, because fictional characters operate in worlds very different from ours. I don’t see a lot of value in even trying to emulate characters like Frodo, Howard Roark, Dagny Taggart, or John Galt.

That said, I think most individuals who seek power over others end up like Boromir, even if only metaphorically.

Frodo vs. 1,000 Gollums

The cartoon is indeed brilliant and may help explain to the RP Fans why a number of folks who sympathize with their cause are not jumping on the bandwagon.

Is RP Frodo? At his age this is almost certainly his Last Hurrah, so maybe he does actually intend to toss the ring into the great volcanic stream. The bad news is he has quite a few more than one Gollum standing in his way to snatch it back.

The worse news is RP's failure will lead to TPTB setting its tyranny in stone. "Liberty? Limited government? Been there, done that. Paul lost, get over it. The people have spoken."

To switch cultural references, the good news is (sing it with me) "Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand - I don't care, I'm still free ..."

“You can’t take the sky from me”

Excellent points, my dear friend. There’s a terrific Heinlein quote (from The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, if my aging memory serves) that is as good as the Firefly theme song ... gotta copy that here one of these days. Trust me, you’d much rather hear me reciting than singing.

Heinlein quotes

Is it, "I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do?"

Or this one?

Political tags - such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth - are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire. - Heinlein

Partly there

Here’s the entire quote—it’s someone’s sig line on a forum I frequent:

I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.

I like the other one you shared, too.

Gollum was the ring's "destroyer" not Frodo

As Tolkien tells the story early, Frodo intended to throw the ring into Mt. Doom. However, when Frodo actually got there and had the opportunity, he did not do so.

It took Gollum to bite the ring from Frodo's hand and fall into Mt. Doom with it. Saying RP matches Frodo (he's not that short) may not be such a compliment. The One ring (the state) only truly belonged to Sauron (Evil) and lust for its power would act to turn all bearers.

Much like Boromir, who died a hero's death defending Merry and Pippin, Frodo had the ring taken from his grasp by actions other than his own.

As Gandalf said, "Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many."

No one should rule others. Again quoting Gandalf with my favorite line from Tolkien (probably my favorite author), "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

I now choose to spend my time on things unrelated to direct involvement in politics.

Amen, Sir.

What bothers me most about the libertarian/anarchist bandwagon for Ron Paul is the waste of freedom money being spent toward his campaign.

Whether Paul wins the nomination or not... whether he wins the Presidency or not, that money will not be put to good use. And in the end, lib/anarchs will not have that money available for freedom or for their own use.

Where will the money go? What would it be used for? Lib/anarchs could use it for education... for blogs, papers, essays... for books (both reading and writing them)... for gulching/survival... for activism; instead it will end up in DC or in Texas, utterly wasted for freedom’s cause.

I can understand the young, idealistic non-lib/anarchs around the country following Ron Paul’s ‘pied piper’ appeal; it IS appealing, if you don’t know better. But there are a number of intelligent lib/anarchs around who do recognize the hype, and therefore should know to keep their money in their pockets.

(Besides, political persuasion is never a good method for proselytizing against politics!)

I agree

You mean like Congressman Rohrabacher, who used to be a libertarian?

Well, I wonder...

"...Rohrabacher, who used to be a libertarian?"

Was he, really?

Some folks talk the talk; some folks walk the walk.

'Tis True

Wikipedia has a decent article that includes his libertarian past. That part seems to be culled from Brian Doherty's Book, Radicals for Capitalism: A Freewheeling History of the Modern American Libertarian Movement, which is a pretty fun read.
