Both snolfs like the Asterix and Obelix books, but Snolf the First really enjoys them. He re-reads the books we have regularly, has adopted some of the phrases and mannerisms that run through the books, and has long wanted to have roast boar.
Well, yesterday he got his wish. After a lovely afternoon of exploring an oceanside park, we stopped at a restaurant for dinner. One of their specials was roast boar—in actuality, the portion was just a couple of ribs with a good-sized bit of meat on them—but I could tell from my first mention of it to him that Snolf the First was interested. Our server was great about dealing with the snolfs (this is a restaurant that gently discourages children under nine, primarily to ensure a pleasurable dining experience for its patrons), describing the specials with flair; and when he described the rib sticking out of the meat, Snolf the First’s eyes widened and I knew he’d order it.
Despite being unsure about the cherry sauce that came with the boar, he greatly enjoyed the entire entrée. He even very gallantly shared with Snolf the Second, who decided she didn’t like her Copper River salmon (which was fabulous); she, in turn, gave him the salmon.
I’m not entirely sure yet that I’m off the hook for a whole roast boar. That I would be willing to try to accommodate, but if he wants a menhir to carry around, he’s on his own.
Next Up, a Menhir?

That’s Lobo’s doing.
I believe this was wild boar too, H.C., but I’m not certain. If I recall correctly wild pig is still hunted in some areas of the USSA—Michigan and Texas are what come to mind for some reason.
I can’t claim any credit for introducing the snolfs to Asterix and Obelix; Lobo did that. I do read the stories aloud to them from time to time, though. It’s fun for all of us.

Mmmmm, good.
Wild boar is good eating (my cousin in Germany is a forest ranger and gets to hunt things like boar) - I hope Snolf I gets around to trying it. And FWIW, they have good taste in reading material.
